Happy Quatorze Juillet
July 14, 2008

Our friends in France are celebrating Bastille Day today. And, as a matter of fact, Angelenos were celebrating it on Sunday in WeHo (sorry I missed it for last weekend's Weekend Warriors). Still, there are plenty of ways to introduce your child to French culture and language in Los Angeles. Not only is Los Angeles home to two different French preschool-12th private schools, each with multiple locations, it also has a plethora of choices of extracurricular French language classes for all ages.
The two private schools, Lyce Franais de Los Angeles and LILA (Lyce International de Los Angeles), are both bilingual, bicultural programs with a high percentage of international students. Like other preschool and pre-K programs in Los Angeles, their early childhood classes are popular so if you're interested in your little one learning franais, contact the school early.
The Alliance Franaise de Los Angeles in Century City has offers French language classes for children and adults, from Mommy and Me to alternative preschool to semi-private classes and more. They even offer a summer camp for children 2-5 years old.
The Beverly Hills Lingual Institute offers a French Little Linguals class for children 4-10. The Savoir Faire Language Institute in Redondo Beach has Mommy and Me and preschool immersion classes, in addition to summer camps. And WorldSpeak in the Westside Pavilion has French language classes for children 8 months to 10 years. All of these language centers offer classes in other languages as well.
Personally, my French is limited to Je ne parle pas franais and a few other choice phrases (one should always know how to ask where the bathroom is, wherever you visit, don't you agree?), but I can imagine it would be delightful to have my son come home and say, Je t'aime, Maman. One can only dream, I suppose.
