Smells Like Preschool Spirit: Mosh with Justin Roberts
January 08, 2009
Come on, admit it. Even when you aren't listening to your kid's music,
you find yourself singing it, right? For the longest time, the
Wiggles' "Crunchy, Munchy,
Honey Cakes" was stuck in my head. Don't get me wrong. It is not that
I wanted to be singing it constantly for the better part of a month, I
honestly could not help it.
This is why I am grateful for
musicians like Justin Roberts. He is talented, his music is cool, and
it just so happens that he sings songs about losing teeth and
Henrietta's Hair. A former Montessori preschool teacher, he clearly
understands that if parents like their kids' music, they are more
willing to play it over, and over, and over again (because you know how
much kids like repetition). His concerts are known to have kiddie mosh
pits. Sweet, dude. It is perfectly acceptable for your child to dance
like a monkey, jump like a kangaroo, and rush the stage...in fact, it
is expected.
Want to mosh with Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Trio? Go to the Coronet this Sunday. Tickets are $15, free for kids ages 2 and younger.
Looking for a smaller venue but still great singer for kids? Peter Alsop will be performing at McCabe's in Santa Monica. Tickets are $8.
Oh,
and by the way, it seems a lot of the singers I listened to when I was
in high school (you know, just a few years ago) have now entered the
kid rock category. Good for me, good for the kids. Here are my
favorites:
Lisa Loeb collaborated with Elizabeth Mitchell to produce Catch the Moon. A lot of familiar tunes beautifully arranged and some new ones that are destined to become classics.
Barenaked Ladies came out with Snack Time last year and it is a lot of fun. Expect giggles from both you and your little ones.
They Might Be Giants also came out with a new CD last year, Here Come the ABCs.
All of their songs are stories put to music. What makes this CD better
is that it is a CD/DVD combo. Two for the price of one. Even better.
